Is Your Social Media Appropriate

How appropriate it your social media?

In today’s connected world, our social media presence often blurs the line between personal and professional life. When I looked through my own social media connections, it struck me how many are travel industry professionals rather than close friends. It made me wonder: how often do we really stop and think about what we post and how it might be perceived to a potential customer, client or employer?

Have you ever started typing a post, paused, and then deleted it, worried it might come across as inappropriate or too opinionated? Many of us hold back for fear of being misunderstood, while others post freely without considering the potential consequences.

More and more travel companies now review social media profiles when considering candidates. They look beyond the CV and pay attention to what people share, how they communicate, and the image they project online. While it may seem unfair, employers want to ensure that anyone representing their brand, especially in client-facing roles, upholds the company’s values and professional image.

In the travel industry, reputation is everything. We’ve all seen examples of individuals liking or engaging with posts that may raise eyebrows, some even bordering on inappropriate. What many people don’t realise is that these interactions are publicly visible and can easily appear on followers’ timelines. It’s worth asking yourself whether your online activity truly reflects how you’d like to be perceived by clients, colleagues, or future employers.

Social media can be an incredible tool for networking, showcasing your expertise, and connecting across the global travel community. But it also demands awareness and discretion. The truth is, our online behaviour is rarely as private as we’d like to think. Whilst it can have a negative impact on how you are viewed professionally, it can also work in your advantage. For example, if you're applying for positions with luxury travel operators and their brands portray a passion for travel and adventure, it can help if you display a similar passion on your personal social media.

Should social media influence whether someone is hired or not? Like it or not, it increasingly does. Your digital footprint speaks volumes so make sure it tells the story you want others to read.
