Importance of a Cover Letter

Whether you’re applying for a travel job through a job board or directly to a recruitment agency or company, if you have the chance to write a cover letter then make sure you do. It’s a chance to make a great first impression.

As a specialist travel recruitment agency we try to support candidates through the whole recruitment process.

Here is our guide to writing a cover letter that will add value for anyone reviewing your application;

  • Make it personal; address the hiring manager if you know their name, or research who they are if an advert doesn’t clearly state who is in charge of the process. This will show attention to detail and keenness.
  • Do not simply copy information from your CV. You need to show your desire to work for the business and demonstrate that you have done some research. If you’re applying to a recruitment agency and you do not know the hiring company, make sure to draw on your relevant experience so that they can immediately identify your skills match the job.
  • It may be a little time consuming, but make sure to tailor your cover letter for every travel job you apply for to ensure you’re seen as a credible candidate.
  • Make sure to highlight any key achievements you have that can support your application and can be related back to the job description. Use key words or terminology from the job description if relevant to your own travel job experience.
  • DON’T waffle. Providing paragraph after paragraph of information will not be given full attention as hiring managers have to review applications at speed, often due to the volume of applications.
  • Always ensure you proof read your cover letter as well as your CV.

Taking the time to write a cover letter shows you’re not just firing your CV off and hoping a Recruiter, Hiring Manager or HR Advisor will see you’re a shining star for their travel job.
