General Advice

General Advice

Applying for a new travel job involves much more than having an interview. There are many other areas that require an equal amount of preparation including perfecting your CV and submitting a job application.

In this section we cover all advice relating to applying for a new job, managing your social media presence, CV tips and more.

  • Utilising Linkedin Correctly

Jayne was recently approached by Danny of TIRO (Travel Industry Recruitment Opportunities) to offer some advice on the dos and don’ts of using Linkedin. If you missed the podcast here are some highlights of what Jayne said:. If you’re only using LinkedIn as an online CV, you’re missing out!

  • Is your social media appropriate?

Thinking about my social media connections, it became apparent that many are travel industry connections rather than close friends. Then I thought do we all consider what we post and how it could be viewed. Are we tempted and start to write something only to delete it because it maybe something we’d say amongst our inner circle of friends or do we hold back in fear that it could be viewed as inappropriate or even offensive. Or do we not really care. There is no doubt more and more companies are viewing social media platforms to see what a potential candidate does in their spare time, what views they have, how out spoken they may be or even how they present themselves socially. It’s interesting that this can have a direct impact on your future career prospects. Is this fair you may say, well if you are in a client facing role how you behave could have an influence on a company’s brand or even your own reputation in the travel industry

  • Ramping up your response rate

So you’re on the hunt for a change in career, spending hours a day trolling through your favourite Job boards. Then you spot it, standing out like a house on fire is your perfect job title! No time for second thoughts, you need to apply before someone else snatches your dream job and after attaching your CV you frantically hit send. Relief kicks in and you bubble with excitement in waiting for a reply. Soon applying for this dream job starts to feel like a distant memory and before you know it, a week has gone and you haven’t heard a word. You know you were perfect for that job, so why didn’t anyone contact you? I may have the answer.
