Video Interview Tips

For most of us, having a video call has become second nature. However this familiarity can mean that it’s easy to forget the simple things to remember when preparing for a video interview. Interviewing from home is easy to set up and if you prepare in advance it can be less stressful than interviewing in person.

Whether you’re using Microsoft teams, Google Meet or another platform, you should always cover off the following in advance of your interview:

  • Download the software
  • Practice, Practice, Practice, ask friends and family to be your interviewer so you become more comfortable with using video software
  • Create a professional username if required
  • Conduct a quick test well in advance of the interview to make sure it’s all working correctly
  • Turn off all other applications so you are not distracted

As with any interview it’s always important to present yourself in the best light and be confident. This may be your first impression on the business and so it’s important to ensure it is a good one.

Here are some handy tips for when you’re having your first video interview:

Smile and Focus

One of the easiest rules to remember when interacting with anyone is simply to smile. There is nothing more engaging than smiling throughout your call with a friendly expression. It is equally important to make direct eye contact. When you scan the room or look away from the camera, you might appear untrustworthy or indifferent. The person with whom you are speaking deserves your full attention so make sure to stay focused and friendly.

Choose your Colours Wisely

Certain colours like black, white and many shades of blue look great on video. Patterns like small dots or stripes can be more distracting than solids so think about a colour to wear that is easy on the eye.

Background Check

While you are the focus of the call and the video, remember that there will be background material that the viewer will see. Think about how your camera is set up and what can be detected behind you. Do you have a blank wall behind you, or is there a pile of washing for the interviewer to view.

Lighting

Check to ensure you have enough lighting that doesn’t create shadows or look to harsh on your interviewers screen.

Take it Seriously

You should prepare and consider a video interview as seriously as a face to face interview. In lots of cases, being successful in a video interview determines whether you progress further into the process or make it to the face to face round. We cannot stress enough how important it is to research the company you are interviewing with and come prepared with not only an understanding of the business, but some smart questions to ask the hiring manager.
